Dear Friend,
If you are reading this letter, it’s probably because you know a
water polo player.
They’re tough. They’re smart. They’re willing to go the
distance—not just in the pool, but in school and work and life as well.
If you don’t know one, don’t take my word for how unique these athletes are. The Bleacher Report just
named water polo as the toughest
sport—ahead of football, rugby, basketball, hockey, boxing, and others—in areas
of endurance, speed, strength, agility, skill, and physicality. This could be
why the United States Navy specifically prioritizes water polo players when recruiting
for their elite SEALs program—often regarded as among the toughest and smartest
personnel in the military.
Many other water polo players use their discipline to become
doctors, lawyers, physical therapists, teachers, policemen, paramedics, and
entreprenuers. How does a sport like water polo produce such a high number of quality
contributors to society?
Orange County Water Polo Club (OCWPC) starts forming boy and girl
athletes at an early age, combining a potent combination of teamwork, training,
and discipline with fun. With over 150 years of combined water polo experience,
the club has produced many high school and college All-Americans, Division 1
scholar/athletes, and professional players overseas since 2005. In fact, in
2011, 30% of the athletes on the 1st Team All-CIF Division 1 Boys
Water Polo began playing at OCWPC.
To continue developing quality athletes, OCWPC needs your help! As
a not-for-profit community organization, OCWPC is seeking your tax-deductable
contribution to continue developing high-caliber people. Your generous contribution
will help the club with rising facility fees, athletic scholarships, new
equipment, additional coaches’ salaries, and travel competition expenses.
Can we count on you to help us out this year? Following are some
suggested contribution ideas; whatever you or your company can contribute goes directly
to support these kids… and it makes a HUGE difference in our community’s future.
I will be happy to answer any questions about our program.
On behalf of Orange County Water Polo Club, I thank you and I look
forward to speaking with you soon!

OCWPC's 2011 Holiday Camp Attendees (from left):
Hylah Prussak (San Clemente), Maddie Long (San Clemente),
Aly Perkins (San Clemente) |
Orange County Water Polo Club is proud to announce the selection of three of its female athletes for USA Water Polo's Holiday Camp. For five days in early-December, Hylah Prussak, Maddie Long, and Aly Perkins will train and learn from the best coaches in the country at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Under the guidance of the Olympic Development Program (ODP), the camp will focus on specific training techniques used by the current Women's National Water Polo Team, including rigorous dry-land training and classroom instruction. Each athlete will have a great experience staying in the Olympic Training Center dorms, learning new skills, and meeting new friends from across the country. USA Water Polo’s Holiday Camp was started in 1985 and remains one of the USAWP’s greatest annual events. Each year athletes and coaches from across the country convene at the USA Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to learn from the best coaches in our country. This year, the coaching staff will include Kim Everest (National Team Coach), Kyle Kopp (1996, 2000 Olympian and National Team Coach), Kyle Utsumi (Junior National Coach), Sean Nolan (2000 Olympian and National Goal Keeper Director), and Marcelo Leonardi (Junior National Coach).

2011 14u National Junior Olympic Qualifier |
|
In the Fall of 2010, Kevin Perkins and his two daughters began to look for an existing team where he could build a next generation water polo program for girls. Perkins, a San Clemente High School alumni, felt like there was an opportunity to add to the competitive landscape of existing area clubs while making it entirely fun for his daughters and their teammates. By focusing on fundamentals, teamwork, and game scenarios, he has built up the team within a year to qualify for the National Junior Olympic tournament.
Now, he intends on building up the Girls Program further by increasing the size of the 14u team, as well as create a 12u team for athletes who have never played before. "This is a really great club," says Coach Perkins. "We train girls from all the surrounding communities with the latest techniques that ultimately put them at a higher level of play for high school." Perkins--who while at SCHS was a All-America selection, National Youth Team participant, and brief player at UC San Diego--knows how to effectively teach the parts of the game so players can improve quickly. For example, Perkins anticipates two of his senior athletes will try out for--and play on--this year's National Olympic Development Program (ODP) team for 8th Grade and Under Girls.
"This is a very exciting time for Women's Water Polo. The sport has grown tremendously in the past few years, due largely to the success of the Women's National Water Polo Team. Frankly, their success lately has reminded me of the same success the 1996 Women's National Soccer Team had," said Perkins. "There was so much support and momentum for Girls Soccer from that time, that the number of young girls joing club teams exploded. We are on the verge of this as well."
For more information, or if you are interested in trying out the OCWPC Girls Program, please contact OCWPC.
